Kanya, an adolescent girl from Tamil Nadu, is a successful swimming champion with a promising career. When she gets her first period, her family demand she accepts the traditional status of a woman and all that entails. Externally, Kanya appears to surrender to her fate, but her inner trauma and discord escalate until she musters the courage to revolt against the system.
In Tamil, kanyā means “virgin”, or “girl”.
