As wells run dry in rural landscapes and fish rain from skies, filmmakers document our planet’s changing relationship with humanity. These panelists’ works have explored a range of ecological concerns, from displacement caused by hydro-dams that submerge entire villages and their mythic systems, to the politics of water access in parched regions. They capture ecological loss as well as the resilience of communities facing irreversible change. These realities are captured not in grand narratives but through intimate storytelling – letters between separated lovers, daily struggles for resources, and secret dreams of abundance. Together, they discuss the ethical and aesthetic challenges of filming environmental transformation, and how cinema can move audiences from witnessing to action.
