After hearing a prophecy that his elderly mother may die soon, Sakol sets out on a one-day pilgrimage to nine temples as a remedy. Just two weeks before her birthday, he brings his ailing mother, along with his wife, brother, sister, and children, on the journey through the splendour of Thai temple architecture in Samut Prakan, a coastal gateway city where tradition and modernity meet. From one temple to the next, the nine family members continue their rituals of merit-making, prayer and offering, while the grandmother grows increasingly weary, both physically and mentally. Unfolding over a single day as light moves from morning to evening and finally into darkness, the film observes a family that tries, and often fails, to fit together, bound by care, belief and habit. Drawing on the director’s own childhood temple trips, it is a gentle, wry portrait of faith, superstition and a country caught in its own cycles.
