At a spa in the Tuscan Hills, Andrei Gorchakov, a Russian poet and musicologist researching the life of an 18th century composer, meets a mysterious man who is convinced that the end of the world is near. Tarkovsky’s first film outside the USSR works as a study of themes such as memory, melancholia and disenchantment with the material world. The film is a literal and metaphorical embodiment of its title as it explores themes of exile and displacement through a Russian writer’s journey to Italy.
